At the request of professionals, the Label Maroc was instituted in 1998 with the collaboration of the Fishery Department. The Label Maroc is a distinctive brand attesting that a fish product conforms to the relevant standard as well as all additional provisions of this product’s individual circular.
The quality label is granted after the verification of self-inspection performed by the requesting producer, by regular verification visits (every 11 months) and by chemical and microbiological analysis of the product in question. While the Label Maroc was originally an initiative of the fishing industry, the labeling system can easily be adapted to other products. In collaboration with concerned parties, SNIMA has undertaken to prepare new circulars detailing the labeling of certain categories of agro-food products.
Labeling is currently used for many types of fish products. At the request of economic operators, SNIMA and the Fishery Department established a general circular that addressed all the requirements for the right to use the quality label for fish products, as well as individual circulars referring to specific types of fish products (canned sardines, half-conserved anchovies, fresh fish, frozen fish, canned tuna, canned mackerel, etc.).
